4 Tips to Getting the Best Lawn on the Block

4 Tips to Getting the Best Lawn on the Block

A healthy sense of competition is a good thing, and spring seems to bring out the competitive nature among many homeowners. Maybe we are triggered by the pollen in the air or the warm breezes of spring. Whatever the motivation, many homeowners want to make their lawn the source of envy among their neighbors. At Commercial Lawn Equipment, we have the skills, knowledge and equipment to help you attain your landscaping goals, no matter how grand they might be. The following tips can help you make your lawn look its best this year.

Begin by Aerating the Soil

Over time, the soil that supports your lawn becomes compacted. This can occur due to heavy foot traffic, or even after a season of mowing. Compacted soil does not allow the optimal flow of air or water, both of which are critical elements to a green and healthy lawn. Each spring, begin your lawn care by aerating the lawn, which creates small holes around 3 inches deep. That process will loosen the soil, allowing water and air in and creating the best environment for healthy microorganisms to thrive.

The best way to fertilize is by starting with a soil test, which will reveal any existing deficiencies or issues with pH. That allows you to choose the best possible fertilizer for your lawn's specific needs.

Water Deeply, But Less Often

Many homeowners feel that the more often they water their lawn, the better. While the reasoning behind this is easy to understand, in reality, it is a flawed approach. Frequent watering does not encourage your grass to develop a deep root network. The grass is getting sufficient water at the surface of the soil, so why push down deeper? Shallow roots will not be able to survive a period of drought, however, and your grass will suffer if there is a break in your regular watering schedule. By watering thoroughly but only once or twice a week, a deep and healthy root network will grow.

Fertilize in the Spring and Fall

Even the greenest lawn needs a bit of a nutrient boost every now and then. By fertilizing in the spring and fall, you are making sure that your grass has all of the nutrients it needs to thrive. The best way to fertilize is by starting with a soil test, which will reveal any existing deficiencies or issues with pH. That allows you to choose the best possible fertilizer for your lawn’s specific needs.

Mulch Every Time That You Mow

Another great way to create a green, thick and healthy lawn is by using a mulching mower to augment the soil every time that you mow. A good mulching mower will pulverize grass clippings into small bits, and then allow those pieces to fall into the lawn as you mow. That puts important nutrients right back into the soil, where the grass can use them to grow healthy and strong. With a regular mowing schedule, grass clippings should be short enough to disappear into the lawn.
